Viewing Employee Appraisals as a Two Way Process

Employee appraisals are standard within most organisations, giving line managers the opportunity to provide feedback to their team. At 3d we like to look at this as a two way process so we also ask all employees to provide feedback on their line managers on an annual basis. This process gives us valuable feedback that enables us to identify issues, acknowledge good performance and continually develop our managers and management processes.

We have just completed our latest round of surveys and some key take-aways for us were:
• Among those who would strongly recommend their manager, Communication, Responsiveness, Team Support and Collaboration were the most frequently cited strengths.
• 87% of those who strongly recommend their manager also strongly agree that their manager motivates and encourages them to perform at their best.
• 86% of open-ended comments about what managers do well were positive, indicating strong appreciation for manager strengths.
• 95% of respondents would recommend their Account Manager as a good leader, indicating strong overall confidence in regional management.
• 88% of respondents strongly agree their manager is approachable and available when support is needed, reflecting high accessibility.

Leah Howels, HR Manager, who coordinated the survey and collated the responses said ‘This year’s feedback is a real testament to our managers’ efforts. The positive feedback surrounding high levels of approachability and accessibility is a significant achievement, especially given the challenges of operating across such a broad and geographic-dispersed footprint spanning the UK and Europe. With rotas and shifts not always overlapping, alongside the increasing trend of virtual working and management, maintaining strong communication and connection takes real commitment. We will continue to look for room for improvement, but year-on-year the feedback continues to demonstrate the positive impact our managers are having on their teams. A huge thank you to all our managers for their continued hard work and commitment to supporting their teams — it really is appreciated!’
